Travel diary of William Keeney Bixby, a St. Louis businessman, Washington University President, and book collector. Diary is a record of his trip to France, India, Kenya, Mozambique, Uganda, Cape Town in South Africa, Zanzibar, and Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). Bixby described the Taj Mahal in Agra, India; his month-long big-game safari in Kenya; his observations on the three major tribes of Kenya--the Kavirondo, Kikuyu, and Masai; the social life of British plantation owners in Kenya and other East African countries; Lake Victoria and Victoria Falls; and the tomb of Cecil John Rhodes. Traveling through France before his return to the U.S., Bixby also comments on the reconstruction of war-torn France and the historical significance of various chateaux, museums, and monuments.

Bixby, William K. (William Keeney), 1857-1931

William Keeney Bixby was born in Adrian, Michigan, in 1857. His career in the railroad industry began with a job as baggageman and concluded with his position as president and chairman of the board of the American Car and Foundry Co. He retired from that company in 1905 at the age of 48. After retirement he pursued his interests in traveling and in collecting first editions, original manuscripts, and works of art.
